While juggling Middle College courses with two sports, Mayra De Leon, 11, still finds time to pursue her passion for psychology and mentor her younger sibling.
De Leon splits her days between college-level courses at Palomar College and athletic practices at Orange Glen High School, where she competes in both golf and basketball. She’s part of the school’s Middle College program, which lets her earn college credit while finishing high school. De Leon’s goal is to complete her general education early so she’s ready to keep moving forward after graduation. Her dream career is to become a child life specialist, where she can support children and families going through tough times.
“Taking college classes while still in high school can be challenging, but I know it will help me reach my goal of becoming a psychologist,” De Leon said. “I want to help people understand themselves better.”
As the oldest of two siblings, De Leon learned to balance responsibilities early. Between caring for five pets and maintaining her academic schedule, she finds ways to stay connected to her community. When she’s not busy with school, De Leon loves psychology. She enjoys learning about what makes people think and act the way they do and hopes to use that knowledge to help others.Sports are also a big part of her life. De Leon plays basketball and golf, which she says push her both mentally and physically.
She also loves being outside and hanging out with her friends. “I love the outdoors but I hate bugs,” she said with a laugh. At home, De Leon is the oldest of two siblings and helps care for her five pets, including three cats. Talkative, social, and always joking around, she’s known for her positive energy and determination.
“My younger sister looks up to me, so I try to set a good example by showing her that you can pursue multiple interests if you work hard,” De Leon said.
On the golf course, De Leon channels her psychology interests into maintaining mental focus. Her coach noticed this unique approach to the sport. With her drive, sense of humor, and supportive nature, De Leon motivates those around her. Whether it’s friends, teammates, or classmates, she pushes others to believe in themselves and work hard toward their own goals too.
