The Food fair was an undeniable success with both students and staff showing up to support our clubs. A total of 12 clubs and sports attended ranging from MEChA, BC2M, Softball and many more. The event had a wide variety of sweet treats and salty snacks. However some events this year have not seen this kind of success. Students don’t always get the chance to share their opinions but the lack of participation speaks for itself.
“I know a lot of kids don’t want to go because they’re like ‘ oh, it costs money and I don’t wanna stay after school,’ but I think people should go because they’re fun,” Leah Barrientos, 9, said.
The students that chose not to go to school events feel as if there isn’t enough advertising for them other than on social media. Other than not being allowed to go or being busy after school students have said some events seem “lame,” or “boring,” and others are influenced by their friends not to go.
“I feel like no, most of us don’t show up for school events. I Include myself, I don’t really show up for events, even though my group plays a big part because we plan out how everything goes,” ASB member, Osiel Guerrero Garcia, 9, said.
ASB plays a huge role in these events. From deciding on themes, decorations, dates and times ASB has their hands full throughout the entire planning process. Some events are mandatory for members to attend other times certain members chose not to participate.
“I think the general student body is interested in participating, they just need to be asked personally to do so. This generation is kind of scared. I don’t think you all like putting yourself out there, I don’t know you might be afraid you’re gonna be put on social media,” ASB Advisor, Lania Padilla said.
Food fairs and other events involving treats seem to be a fan favorite. Dances on the other hand like MEChA’s La Posada winter dance didn’t have many attendees. Students more specifically some freshmen students said they would like to see more events like the food fair and less small dances because they feel unnecessary in comparison to prom or homecoming.
“That was a fun experience overall seeing the other clubs and sports and what kinds of food they were selling,” Barrientos, said
In the future ASB plans to do the Food fair event again because of its success in the past, and less small dances with MEChA hosting one and ASB hosting two next year. They hope this gets students more excited for big dances like homecoming since they plan to have more activities next year.
“We would like it to have just as many activities, maybe more and have just as much food. It’s just continuing to do the things that are succeeding and doing less of what isn’t,” Padilla, said.
