It’s never too late! On May 28, two seniors and two juniors in track and field ran a 4×800, breaking their personal record for the race distance. Leaving their coach proud and leaving behind an accomplishment. The team was excited they created history. Setting an example for their underclassmen members they strived to be great everyday proving anything is possible if you set your mind to it.
“Being my senior year I definitely wanted to leave something behind so I knew I had to push extra hard to set a new record,” Noel Sanchez, 12, said.
Prior to this record the 4×800 group broke a record on May 18. Sanchez, Kevin Vega, 11, Joseph Saavedra, 12, and Adrian Castaneda,11, broke the school record time for the 4×800 relay. The 4×800 team had the opportunity to run in the CIF sectionals. They beat an eight year old record that had not been beat until now.
“Breaking the record felt really good because it proved that the 4×800 team has only gotten faster since the last record,” Sanchez said.
Once running in the CIF sectionals they beat their own personal record by two seconds with a time of 8.28. Their personal record had them placed 16th place out of 18 teams, though it was not the outcome they would have liked they still felt accomplished.
“My season goal was to just be better than I was when I started the season,” Saaverdra said.
As their goals are reached they will climb higher. They leave their hard work and passion for success for the underclassmen. Helping their members set their own personal goals for their years to come Saaverdra and Sanchez plan on continuing their running dream hoping to show their members they can do it if they just keep trying.
“It made me realize just how much more work I’m going to have to put in to make it to their level. For me they serve as an example that in order to get to a high level you need to be willing to put in the time,” Alexis Ramirez, 9, said.
