As the school year comes to an end, one word keeps floating through the hallways—prom. And with seven P.M fast approaching, excitement is building—but so are the nerves. With dresses hanging in closets and finalized plans to stay in, upperclassmen have mixed feelings about the biggest night of their year.
For some, prom is the moment they’ve been waiting for since freshman year. For others, it’s a night they’ve decided to skip. But regardless of whether the students are counting down the minutes or avoiding the topic entirely, one thing is clear: everyone has an opinion about prom.
“I got my dress last summer—I think in July. I got it early because it was really pretty and I just wanted to be ready for prom before the year started,” Celine Orozco, 12, said.
Many students attending say they’re excited about getting dressed up, dancing with friends, and making memories before high school comes to a close. For these students, it’s not about dates or picture-perfect moments—it’s about celebrating their final dance.
“This is going to mark the biggest moment in all of seniors’s lives and it will be the last moment where you’ll have the class of 2025 together in one room,” Homero Vargas,12, said.
But the fact of the matter is that not everyone feels the same way. Some upperclassmen have decided to simply not attend. And their reasoning for it is valid. Regardless of whether it was due to the cost or a lack of interest, plenty of students are sitting this one out.
“I’m too broke to afford a ticket and I’m going to be working plus I can go next year too,” Jesus Sosa, 11, said.
The pressure to make prom perfect—finding the right dress or tuxedo, the right group, the right moment—can also be overwhelming. But as the Class of 2025 prepares for one of their final high school milestones, each student is walking into today with their own expectations.
“Not everyone gets to experience what l am going to experience that day. But I’m excited to spend the day with my friends and boyfriend, although it’s a school event it is still a special day for me,” Xitlalic Gonzales, 12, said.
