In the spotlight! Junior Track and Field runner, Rodrigo Erreguin, presents his Athlete of The Week award.
With the spring season in full swing, athletes are pushing themselves to new limits—and Rodrigo Erreguin is no exception. In his first year as a member of the Track and Field team, Erreguin has already made a name for himself, consistently showcasing his talent. Whether he’s on the track racing against other athletes or on the field cheering on teammates, Erreguin enjoys playing a role in helping better the team.
“Rodrigo is an amazing teammate. He’s never put anyone down—he’s actually always cheering our teammates on. He’s the kind of person that will support you, in the sense that he’s always there,” Pamela Arroyo, 12, said.
When Erreguin first stepped onto the track, he had more than just a desire to gain experience. To him, it was the representation of a deep connection to his mother, who had introduced him to the beauty of the sport.
“My mom was a part of a track team when she was younger. After talking to her, she told me that it was a wonderful sport. She said that I would have fun if I joined the team and I felt very encouraged. To be honest, she was right. I’ve loved it so far, ” Erreguin, 11, said in Spanish.
Despite being in his first season, Erreguin has already proven himself as a competitor. Two meets ago, he succeeded in setting a new personal record, placing first place in both the 100-meter and the 200-meter. In both races, the junior placed above his senior counterparts after training tirelessly during practice. When asked why he believed he was nominated for Athlete of the Week, he credited his hard work and determination. Whether he knew it or not, the coaches had taken note of exactly that—his incredible determination to the sport.
“In his first year with the Patriots, Rodrigo has been absolutely crushing it! Competing in the 100m, 200m, and anchoring the 4×100 relay, he’s quickly made his mark and is showing what it takes to be a top performer,” Head Coach Mike Mena, said.
